I was at home on maternity leave after having my 3rd child, who was about three weeks old at the time. I remember the morning news was just about ready to go off, and my husband was finishing his coffee and thinking about getting up to go work on the farm.
I had gotten up and gone into the kitchen to do the dishes, and then heard the "special report" music. Poked my head back into the living room to see what it was about, and Bryant Gumble was on, talking about the plane that had just flown into the twin towers.
At that time we were all thinking it was a horrible, tragic accident. A pilot had a heart attack while flying perhaps... horrible to be sure, but not terrorism. But right about then, even while Mr. Gumble was talking to someone on-air about the scene, the second plane hit, live on camera. And there were reports of the Pentagon also being hit at about that same time, and another hijacked plane that seemed to be headed toward the White House.
I can remember walking back into the living room and sinking down on the couch, in disbelief. What was going to be next? I wondered. What else was going to go up in smoke and flames? What other area was a target? Who else was going to die?
